How to Install Proton VPN on Firestick: A UK User's Guide

VPN Download Editorial · · 8 min read

Why Use a VPN on Your Firestick?

For UK viewers, an Amazon Firestick transforms a standard TV into a powerful streaming hub. However, your internet service provider (ISP), such as BT, Virgin Media, or Sky, can see your browsing activity. Under the UK’s Investigatory Powers Act 2016, ISPs are required to collect and store user connection logs. Furthermore, many popular streaming services like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and All 4 enforce strict geo-restrictions, limiting content to UK IP addresses only. A reliable Virtual Private Network (VPN) like Proton VPN encrypts your traffic, masks your real IP address, and can help you access region-locked libraries while adding a layer of privacy to your viewing habits. It’s also crucial for secure remote work, allowing you to safely access company resources on your home network.

Prerequisites Before You Start

Before proceeding, ensure you have:

  • An Amazon Firestick (or Fire TV Cube) connected to your TV and Wi-Fi network.
  • An active Proton VPN subscription. You can sign up on their website. The free tier is available but has significant limitations for streaming.
  • A Proton VPN account username and password.
  • The Downloader app available on the Amazon Appstore. This is the primary tool for sideloading apps not officially listed on the Amazon store.

Method 1: Installing via Downloader (Sideloading)

Since Proton VPN does not have an official app in the Amazon Appstore for Fire OS, you must sideload it. This is a common and safe practice when using trusted sources.

  1. Enable Apps from Unknown Sources: On your Firestick, go to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer Options. Turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. You will see a warning; acknowledge it. For security, you can revert this setting after installation.
  2. Install Downloader: If you don’t have it, search for “Downloader” in the Amazon Appstore and install it. This app lets you enter a URL to download an APK file (the Android app package).
  3. Download the Proton VPN APK:
    • Open Downloader.
    • In the URL bar, type the official Proton VPN APK download link. You must get this directly from Proton’s support site to avoid malware. Search “Proton VPN APK download” on your computer or phone to find the current, correct URL.
    • The app will download and then prompt you to install. Select Install.
  4. Launch and Log In: Once installed, go to your Firestick’s Your Apps & Channels section, find the Proton VPN icon, and open it. Log in with your Proton credentials.

Method 2: Alternative Browser Installation

If you prefer, you can use the Silk Browser (pre-installed) or Firefox for Fire TV to download the APK.

  1. Open your browser and navigate to the official Proton VPN APK download page.
  2. Download the file. Your Firestick will ask for permission to install from the browser. Grant it and proceed with the installation as in Step 3 above.

Configuring Proton VPN and Connecting

Upon first launch, Proton VPN will guide you through a quick setup.

  • Choose a Server: For UK streaming, select a server located in the United Kingdom. Proton VPN clearly labels its servers by city and country.
  • Protocol: The default (WireGuard or OpenVPN) is fine for most users. WireGuard generally offers better speed.
  • Connect: Click the large power button to connect. A key icon will appear in your Firestick’s status bar when active.

Important Note for Streaming: While a VPN can help you appear to be in the UK, services like BBC
